The Exposition Light Rail Transit Project Phase 2 extended the Phase 1 Mid-City/Exposition Light Rail Transit Project from Culver City to City of Santa Monica. The Expo Line was designed with a central aesthetic theme: to weave a multimodal source of civic pride. Designs for the Expo Line seamlessly integrated light rail, bikeway facilities, and pedestrian linkages in a safe, balanced, and cohesive setting.

The Los Angeles Exposition Metro Line Construction Authority awarded the Skanska Rados/PB design-build team with the contract. PacRim Engineering, a major sub to PB, was responsible for providing structural and civil engineering design services for 4 bridges: the Motor Ave Bridge Replacement, the Olympic Blvd Bridge, the Cloverfield Blvd Bridge, and the Centinela Ave Bridge, in addition to several miles of retaining walls and soundwalls, a parking structure, and a comprehensive structural study for the Kenter Canyon Tunnel along the Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica.

PacRim introduced significant innovations to reduce construction cost and expedite the schedule. For the Motor Ave Bridge, PacRim introduced cast-in-place concrete through the girder bridge to accommodate the track profile constraints. The concept also solved geometric challenges at the Sawtelle Boulevard. The existing abutment was retrofitted and widened in lieu of replacement in order to avoid the impact to the existing 42″ sewer line and reduce overall abutment cost.
