The Metro G-Line (previously known as the Metro Orange Line) is one of two Metro Liner bus routes that has dedicated lanes on freeways and surface streets. It provides a vital high-capacity transit link for the San Fernando Valley and extends nearly 18 miles in length from the North Hollywood Red Line station to Chatsworth, with a spur to Warner Center. It is a highly successful transit line in LACMTA’s network, with approximately 23,357 daily riders in 2019.
The Project seeks to implement improvements along the G-Line to improve operating speeds, capacity and safety, while addressing passenger needs and minimizing disruption to San Fernando Valley residents. The proposed improvements include grade separations on major streets, technology for better signal pre-emption with a four-quadrant gating system, and the development and definition of standard operating procedures for operation of the G-Line busway by LACMTA that meet the Project Requirements and related operator training. Coordination with the City of Los Angeles is underway in implementing a pilot gate study for the installation of railroad gates at a non-public, traffic signal-controlled intersection on the G-Line. It is intended that the proposed gating system will reduce travel times for riders and increase ridership capacity, while minimizing or eliminating incidents between vehicles or pedestrians and G-Line buses, and minimizing delay to vehicular traffic.
